My First Pregnancy

I vividly remember being about 5 months pregnant with my oldest daughter in a barre exercise class doing some ab work. 

I looked down and noticed a big bulge in my abdomen which to me looked almost like a hernia. 

It Really Freaked Me Out!

I happened to have a doctor’s appointment the next day and she looked at it and said “oh it’s not a big deal, you just have a diastasis recti, your abdominals are starting to split.” 

I left the office feeling uneasy, that just did not sit well with me. One, my expertise is in physical therapy, anatomy and healing the body, so I knew that this was not normal. 

I was able to prevent my abdominal separation from worsening during my pregnancy by being extremely careful, but it was always in the back of my mind. 

After I gave birth to my first daughter, I remember getting back into fitness again and I actually peed my pants during one of my first exercise classes. A friend of mine actually joked with me and said... 

"Welcome To Motherhood!"

At the time, I shrugged this comment off as well, but again I couldn’t help but thinking that this was not normal at all. 
I was surprised to find the lack of educational information that existed for women and fitness during and after pregnancy. My six week follow up with my doctor basically consisted of my doctor saying, “go ahead and return to your normal routine.”

Wait... what?

I didn’t know what normal was anymore. I developed diastasis recti ( aka abdominal separation). This gave me the appearance of what is referred to as “the mom pooch,” and I was struggling not only with the way I looked after giving birth but more so the way I felt.

I was so used to being strong and having the time to dedicate to fitness. To be honest, I was completely overwhelmed with everything, especially when I returned to work.

Breastfeeding was proving to be very challenging for me, and I struggled to not only find the energy but the time to focus on my own health.

As a first time mom, I felt anxious and nervous about every little thing. I remember being in my office one day and just shutting the door so I could cry.

I knew then and there that I had to find a way back to myself while adjusting to my new role as mom. 

It was my second postpartum experience that truly humbled me.

My second daughter was born almost three years after my first and my experience could not have been more different. With my oldest, I was able to work out every day and take time for myself during my pregnancy and postpartum. 
During my second pregnancy, I was in the middle of many life changes, caring for a toddler and not able to give my body all the attention that it needed. Postpartum was more of a struggle for me as well. 
I was trying to balance a jealous toddler, breastfeeding, a new house and I had gained more weight this time around. 
I also developed diastasis recti again a little more severe than the first time around (which can happen with multiple pregnancies). I was struggling to lose the weight, despite my best effort and doing all the right things. 
I went back to running too soon and began experiencing pelvic pain, hip pain and honestly I just felt awful.

I knew better, and I knew something had to change for me. 

Fitness was such a huge part of my daily life, I felt lost without it

...and just wanted to get a piece of me back again. 

I began just walking and performing gentle core exercises to start and began to feel more like myself again. 

I started pushing myself a little more and developed a strength training routine that I actually enjoyed. 

I was eating well and managed (although may I say it was extremely difficult) to breastfeed my daughter for a year. 

I poured myself into research on diastasis recti, women’s health and postpartum fitness. 

I developed a core and ab program that made me not only have my flat stomach again but made me feel stronger. 

I thought I was well on my way even though I still peed my pants sometimes when I laughed too hard, sneezed or ran too much. 

I still felt as though sex didn’t feel as it used to and I could almost sense a weird pressure in my pelvic region. 
At the time, I chalked it up to new motherhood with the attitude that “this too shall pass.” 

However, as a Physical Therapist, I just couldn’t accept that my body just wasn’t responding how I wanted it to.

I know our bodies are made to heal and I was frustrated with my progress. So I decided to pursue a specialty in pelvic health physical therapy. I began studying all things pelvic health, women’s health and postpartum care and discovered a whole world out there dedicated to improving women's lives.
